A post of gratitude

This is Cari, reference librarian, posting. Tonight, Tuesday the 23rd, I had just finished teaching Introduction to Windows XP in the computer lab, when a patron reported that I had a flat tire. Two of the students in the class, Joe and Dennis, were kind enough to come out to the parking lot and change the tire. I'd like to express my gratitude, both to the patron who let the circulation desk know that I had a flat, and to Dennis and Joe, who were so helpful. I am lucky to work in a community that is so giving and sharing. Thank you again, so much!

Finding GOOD information on the Web.

I was complaining to my staff about the awful garbage I seem to be getting from Google these days, even when I do an advanced search. I receive "google alerts" that contain news about Twinsburg, Twinsburg Library etc. Some of the results have no relation to my topic! Gone are the good old days when you got quality results from Yahoo, remember EXCITE! and "HOTBOT?" My techies started telling me how Google ranks articles using keywords, how often a word appears, how often a page is linked etc. What I really wanted to know is-where can I get good solid information that doesn't "scandalize me?" (as my French professor used to say. ) C.J. Lynce our systems administrator reminded me that I should use www.ohioweblibrary.org when looking for credible information. It is a great place to get information from credible databases and magazines. Fred Baerkircher, our Adult Services Manager, turned me onto this PC WORLD article, that talks about "semantic searches." Semantic searching doesn't just look for keywords and rank them, but "dips into the meaning in language to produce highly relevant search results." This sounds like a great improvement. CJ reminded me that human (translate-librarians!) created search directories are the best. It is up to people to find the best, credible information. An example is Kidsclick a web search created for kids by librarians. This is a directory that will lead young students to appropriate sites. You can even have the page set up by "Dewey Numbers." Where you find the book on the shelf-is where you would find the web page! I've unsuscribed to my Google alerts-hoping to remove some of the garbage out of my brain, and will listen to my techies-who won't steer me wrong. So...say no to Google-just for a day, and see what you find!

Joyful and Sad Library News

As it is with every family-Team TPL experiences the ups and downs of life. This past week brought joy as we saw former Teen Librarian Natalie Layne marry at the Western Reserve Historical Society, followed by a lovely reception at the Rainforest of the Cleveland Zoo.
Natalie served as our Teen Librarian from September 2006 to September 2007, before moving to Boston. The wedding was lovely and Matt and Natalie have been truly blessed with a great love as well as a lot of common sense!

The sadness came when Bert, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who served as the unofficial library animal mascot for the past 5 years passed on to "the Rainbow Bridge." He was such a sweet dog who kept teens on their best behavior during lock-ins and Anime Nights. He provided great laughter as he wanted the students to "stop running" during one of our plays. He could also often be seen riding or walking in the Memorial Parade. So, here is a salute to Natalie & Matt and
sweet Bert!

Ovarian Cancer Month

You will see a lot of "teal" around the library during the month of September. This is "Team TPL's" effort to make "woman and the men who love them" aware of the silent disease, ovarian cancer. As someone who is a survivor of ovarian cancer and has lost a sister to the same disease, this is very near and dear to my heart. I was very fortunate that my cancer was discovered early-but it is such a quiet disease, that often very strong warnings can be confused with acid reflux, anxiety and many other causes. While some may find this an uncomfortable subject, it is important information. Please find information in the library, and enter a drawing to win a L'Oreal Color of Hope necklace (donated by a private citizen)beginning September 4.
