Using Your Library to Get Through Economic Slowdown

The Levy Committee's co-chair Karen Tschudy provided these great ideas at
http://citizensfortpl.wordpress.com

Here are nine ways libraries can help you get through our country’s economic slowdown:

1. Try it before you buy it. Money is tight. Don’t buy a CD, DVD, or book without “test-driving” it first. Come to the library and borrow it to see if it’s a purchase that is right for you. If they don’t have it, they’ll try their hardest to get it for you.

2. Two words: FREE INTERNET.

3. Bolster your business. We have access to “subscription only” databases and expensive research tools that will help you reach new and different markets, even during tough times.

4. Get the skills you need. Libraries offer classes on a variety of topics. Pick up your library newsletter, listen to their podcasts or visit their website. You’ll quickly find you can learn new things ranging from basic computer skills to learning sign language to how to start a business.

5. Find entertainment. Libraries offer classes, events and activities for children and adults, almost always at no cost. A fun night out doesn’t need to be an expensive night out.

6. Hold meetings that get results. Libraries often offer low-cost or no-cost meeting spaces. Whether you’re a school group trying to develop a fundraiser or a CEO trying to launch a business, stop in to see if you can hold your meeting at the library.

7. Be a well-informed investor. The library has up-to-date stock market information that will help you get through tough times. Make smarter investment decisions with the most current financial information.

8. Find a new job, a better job, or a different job. Use computers, books, newspapers, and more to find a employment and build resumes and cover letters.

9. Regain a sense of community. Feeling a bit disconnected during tough times? Libraries are places where communities come together. Stop in and take a moment to take in the action… you’ll find it abuzz with information, people, and possibilities!

Nobody Uses Or Needs Libraries Anymore!

I hear this often, "libraries are a thing of the past," "everyone will be reading only ebooks in 2 years," (they told me the last one in 2001!)
As I went out on Tuesday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. to see how my staff was doing, I reveled in the fact that the library staff was entirely too busy to speak to their director! TeenCrossings was full of computer users and students looking for book recommendations, Children's Place was full of children doing crafts, looking for summer reading books with their parents, and signing up for Summer Reading Club. "Surely," I thought, "the adult services staff will have time for me." But no, they had a line of people at the information desk, a room full of patrons looking for CDS, books, and DVDS. The "living room" was full of patrons catching a catnap or using the library's WI-FI. There were tutors at desks helping students prepare for the next school year. And of course the computer lab and check out desk were as busy as usual.

Your library is vital and breathing...not a dead institution. After only 2 and 1/2 weeks into summer reading we have 1400 students signed up! Through June 14 alone, we have circulated over 44,000 items! Visit us...be part of the excitement!

Issue 3, August 5

Each Twinsburg School District resident will receive a mailing this week, presenting the basic facts of Issue 3, the Library's additional levy issue on the ballot this August. The 1 mill levy will generate approximately $799,000 to help the library maintain its current operations; expand hours, remain open on Sundays during the summer months (beginning in 2009); cover costs related to the mandated minimum wage increases and proceed with needed repairs and improvements that had been put on hold due to the lack of funds.

Should you have further questions regarding the Levy issue, please go to www.twinsburglibrary.org for information, and http://citizensfortpl.wordpress.com/ if you would like to help support the levy. We also have information in the library, and would appreciate endorsements as well. Endorsement sheets can be found at each service desk in the library.

Don't forget to vote on August 5, 2008

Read for the Gold -Summer Reading Club Kickoff

June 1, 2008.

My first day as director started off with one of the best activities of the year, our Summer Reading Club Kickoff. The Youth Services and Adult Staffs and our teen volunteers were on hand to register nearly 400 people for our five different clubs. The community can participate in the Listening Club for ages 2-5; Readers club for ages K-3; Tweens grades 4-7; Teens grades 8-12 and the Adult Club. The Friends helped us by funding a visit from Party Animals who brought their fun inflatables; the Twinsburg Fitness Center provided an obstacle course and Frisbees for the children; and Giant Eagle of Twinsburg donated popsicles. It was exciting to see everyone so eager to get started on their summer reading. Both departments have worked hard to develop a fun program based on an Olympic theme. If you haven’t signed up yet, you have the whole summer to join!

Summer Hours

The Twinsburg Public Library is closed on Sundays beginning with May 25, through August 31.
Sunday hours will resume for 2008 on September 7, 2008.
