Yesterday (Thursday-Aug. 30th) afternoon they did a "roll test" to see if the stabilization was up to specifications. Two small areas at opposite ends of the parking lot were found to be "soft". While digging to reinforce the back area in the corner by the connector drive, a small pocket of quicksand was found. They are going to do their best to improve and stabilize the site by placing mesh, large stones and more fill in the area. Paving of the back area is scheduled for Tuesday (September 4th) and should be usable the next day.
Please remember that the excessive amount of rain has caused construction delays. The subsoil of this part of Twinsburg consists primarily of clay deposits and/or quicksand. The clay traps water close to the surface and causes instability in the soil above. Since our parking lot is so heavily used, we have to stabilize our subsoil way beyond code.
The high school and fitness center was constructed several years after the library and has inadvertently contributed to the underground erosion of our parking lot. Even though most of the water properly drains away from our building, the clay in the subsoil still trapped enough water to cause the damage. Here's hoping that the additional drainage and complete stabilization of the subsoil will do the trick for the next 25-50 years.
