There is now a laser printer, an inkjet printer cartridge and a cell phone recycle station outside the computer classroom in the library. All items can be recycled and are bought back by Recycle-4-Fundraising. The money is paid back directly to the library. Please bring in all old printer cartridges and cell phones! Happy New Year to all our patrons and their families. We appreciate your patience while we were closed the extra days during the holidays. Our staff appreciated the time off, and we were able economize to help with our forthcoming budget year. All of our patrons were friendly and helpful, and we appreciate the many volunteers who helped us return items to the shelves so quickly.

There were some technological improvements at the end of the year. The Mouse Pad now has a pc reservation and print management system in order to free up staff to help with patron's questions. We have also installed to self-check out stations at the circulation desk for patrons with easy checkouts to help speed up the long lines. You'll also find a new color copier in the computer lab for your copying needs. Many patrons have expressed concern that these new items are costing employees their positions, but they are not. They are freeing up staff to spend more time with patrons helping them with holds, fine issues and more!

We hope you enjoy our improvements and join us in celebrating our 100th Birthday this year!

Action Needed on House Bill 318 - Contact Senators Now!
There is an important proposal before the Ohio Senate that requires immediate action. Passage of House Bill 318 would postpone the final cut in the state income tax. Although this proposal means that Ohions will not pay any more state income tax than they did in 2009, it will provide enough money to the state to balance the budget next year.
Cuts in Ohio's budget have already been severe. Public libraries have had to cut hours, lay off staff, reduce materials and cut back on services. Without support of HB 318, more cuts to libraries and other important services are on the way. This bill must pass before the Ohio Senate is in recess. Press Release

• Public libraries• Local governments• K-12 schools• Higher education• Children’s Services• Social service agencies

Please voice your own opinion regarding this matter to your state senator.

International Year of Astronomy Unveiling @TPL

Twinsburg Public Library will take visitors on a journey to the center of our Galaxy when it unveils unprecedented mural-sized images of the Milky Way’s core as seen by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory. Rock n' Reads in Childrens Place

Twinsburg Public Library is pleased to be selected as a partner library with Cracker Barrel's Rockin' Reading Program. Rockin’ Reader builds caring and literacy in the community by providing a comfortable space for volunteers to read with children. In the first year of the program, the volunteers at the partner schools contributed 16,400 hours of reading time with children. Now in its second year, Cracker Barrel is honored to have Rockin’ Reader partnerships with 225 elementary schools/libraries in 29 states. Cracker Barrel sent Twinsburg Library two double rocking chairs, a barrel bookshelf and books. Volunteers sign up for time-slot and read to children. If you would like to volunteer to read to our young patrons, please see a staff member in Children's Place. The Ladies' Night Book Group has switched to every 3rd Monday night at 7pm. Our next meeting is on September 21 and the group is discussing Stardust by Neil Gaiman - Stardust is an utterly charming fairy tale. News on Library Funding

There seems to finally be some news on the State Budget front.
Today's Plain Dealer quotes State Senator Dale Miller as saying, "I think that libraries and mental health programs will do considerably better than the governor's framework." The paper also states that sources familiar with the deal said that two-thirds of the $227 million cut proposed for public libraries will be restored.

This is encouraging. While there will still be a significant cut, it is certainly more manageable than the first framework mentioned by the Governor. Thank you to all our patrons for supporting us by calling the Governor and our legislators. We know that we can always count on your support!

We're Number One! Again!

Despite looming cuts, Twinsburg Public Library receives highest ranking; circulation at an all-time high!

Although all libraries across the State are facing cuts in state library funding, the Twinsburg Public Library proves how valuable it is to the community. The latest results for the HAPLR report, which rates over 9,000 public libraries in the United States using the latest federal data, have been released and the Library ranked number one in the entire country for its population served. The Twinsburg Public Library is also one out of only 11 libraries in the entire country that have appeared in the top ten in each addition of the report, five of which it ranked number one. www.haplr-index.com

The high ranking is not surprising considering the incredible statistics put out by TPL for programming and circulation each month. In June, the Library circulated over 116,000 items, the highest it has ever seen in a single month.

The Twinsburg Public Library is grateful for the two local property tax levies generously supported by Twinsburg School District residents, state funding; membership in Clevnet and most importantly the Library patrons that make such great use of Library materials and programs. The Library Staff, "Team TPL" has worked hard to meet the needs and desires of everyone in a fiscally responsible manner, and has performed well under the stress of looming budget cuts. Thank you Twinsburg for making us number one!

Recent Update On Library Funding

Information from Lynda Murray at the Ohio Library Council regarding the recent budget announcements.

"News about the state budget has been fast and furious today. A number of reports by a variety of sources have been checked and verified. Reports out of both the legislature and the Governor's office are that progress is being made and they are close to an agreement, but it appears unlikely that any resolution will be reached in time to meet the July 1 deadline.

The Ohio Senate has just passed a continuing resolution and approved an interim budget to give themselves another week to work out an impasse over how to fill a $3.2 billion hole in the $54 billion budget. House concurrence is expected. The interim budget would run through July 7, giving legislators another week to balance the two-year spending plan that was to start Wednesday. The measure will fund state programs at 70% of the current level, and authorize Gov. Strickland to tap the state's rainy day fund to balance the 2009 budget that ends Tuesday. The aforementioned 30% reduction will not apply to the Public Library Fund and library funding will remain unchanged in the interim budget.

In a statement, Senate President Bill Harris praised the professionalism House and Senate negotiators have demonstrated, saying the interim budget was needed to allow adequate time "to mechanically get the bill ready for the floor."

The budget process is now in the negotiation stage. The calls and messages sent to the Governor's office and the legislature have been effective. However, at this point in the process, additional calls, e-mails, rallies, or other demonstrations of library support may not be effective."

Library Funding Crisis Update

There is a conference committee scheduled for 10 am on Sunday, and they hope to vote on the budget on Monday. The process is very fluid,and we will keep everyone informed. There are many other groups facing disastrous cuts as well. It is a difficult and trying time for many, and the Library appreciates your support.

Governor's Proposed Cut Threatens Libraries

In an effort to balance the budget, Governor Strickland has proposed a 30%
reduction in the Public Library Fund, in addition to the 20% loss that
libraries have faced due to the low revenues garnered by the State.

The Twinsburg Public Library is in better shape than most libraries, due
to the generosity of our local residents with the passage of our most
recent levy. Should the Governor's plan go forward however, our State
funding could return to the level of 1998 figures, and anticipated
improvements, recently added hours, materials and staffing budgets will be threatened.
The Library is used to working with the ebbs and flows of the General
Revenue Fund, but such a drastic cut will impact the library's ability to
provide its superior level of service. Many libraries throughout the State
who are solely dependent on State Funding would be forced to close. Please
contact your local legislator and the Governor's office to voice your concerns.

Calling All Musicians

The Twinsburg Public Library would like to enhance our customers' experience by bringing music to the library on Sundays from 2-3 pm. Soloists, or ensembles no larger than a quartet are needed to perform in the library's main corridor for an hour. Music should be soothing...the library has an electronic piano available.
