Battle of the Books! Winners Again

The Twinsburg team of Bob Liu, Mackenzie Barry, Stephanie Doran, Benjamin Bard and Natalie Tarchik made sure that the silver trophy will stay at TPL for another year! For the third time, Twinsburg teens defeated the Stow-Munroe Falls and Hudson Libraries to win the "Stand-off on Route 91" There was some fingernail chewing on my part, as Stow really gave our team a run for their money this year. The team did very well in all three lightning rounds, which gave them a nice lead, and answered 10 out of 12 "non-competitive" round questions. Cable 9 was there to film the event, which will appear during the coming months. Librarians Mark Simon and Beth Hatch put a lot of work into the program, preparing the team, writing questions and making sure the day went off without a hitch! This program was sponsored by the Friends of the Twinsburg Library, The Friends of the Stow-Munroe Falls Library, Cable 9 and the Learned Owl. Thank you teens, for making us proud!

Special Patron Recognition

As a librarian, I come in contact with many people every day. Our exchanges are usually simple where I either find a book or other material they need, help them find information using print or online resources, or simply place something on hold for them. Today, I had the opportunity to meet a very special patron. An older gentlemen came into the library with his laptop and needed some help connecting to the Internet and saving files to a CD. As I was helping him, he asked about the chess program here at the library. I learned that the gentleman, Mr. Frank Fogg, was once a famous chess player himself. In 1972, Fogg played against the famous Tirgan Petrosian, a world renown chess master, and beat him! After 33 moves and 2.5 hours of playing, Fogg watched as Petrosian lay down his king in defeat. Mr. Fogg was kind enough to give me a copy of the newspaper article, signed by Petrosian himself.

With a Little Help from our Friends...

We accomplish so many things because of our Friends Group, the Library Foundation and our many volunteers, without whom so many things would never be accomplished. Our latest example, is Mrs. Deb Durdel, who took time out of her busy schedule to paint our "senior scene" fireplace area. She is so talented and did such a wonderful job. The finishing touches will be done soon! Come check it out!

Author in our Midst

Local author and patron of the library, Edgar Barmann will be having a book signing at the Twinsburg Senior Center on Wednesday, August 13 at 8:30 a.m. Edgar has written, Dear Annamelia, a novel about a widower dealing with grief after losing his wife to a stroke. His encounter with with a widow named Myrtle changes his life. Edgar is a former managing editor of the Catholic Universe Bulletin, and has woven the Catholic faith into the story. He enrolled at Kent State and the age of 80, to study fiction writing, which lead him to write his first novel. Meet this new, truly "local" author at the our senior center! www.edgarbarmann.com
