OverDrive to Distribute MP3 Audiobooks to Booksellers and Libraries

OverDrive announced Wednesday, March 19th, that they will be releasing titles in MP3 format without DRM to libraries following their May release of downloadable titles through Digital Centers in select Borders stores. This format will be compatible with iPods as well as almost every MP3 player and mobile phone on the market.

OverDrive is based in Cleveland and is the primary supplier of downloadable audiobooks to CLEVNET Libraries, including the Twinsburg Library. Our libraries purchase the titles from OverDrive and library patrons download them for free.

OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks for libraries will include thousands of titles from Blackstone Audio, Books In Motion, CSA Word, and Audio Evolution. They will also be releasing a Mac compatible version of their OverDrive Media Console, which is used to download, play, and transfer audiobooks to portable devices.

Beta Testing of New Library Website is Completed

We will shortly roll out our new web site after considering the suggestions received from over 250 Beta testers. The response was overwhelmingly positive regarding the content and ease of use (92% approval), but there was no clear winner of the skins or color scheme for our template default page.

We will be modifying the color scheme of our final default page slightly and adding an image of the library to the top banner, but it is also our wish to change the banner frequently to match the seasons, special events, or whatever else tickles our fancy. We hope you will enjoy the changes, but if you prefer consistency - that option will always be available for you by selecting the default skin located in our Template Chooser.

Come celebrate the launch of our new website Wednesday, April 2nd at 4:00 pm. Survey participants will be eligible to win prizes and refreshments will be provided for everyone by the Friends of the Library.

Guess Who's Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?

Everyone has probably watched or heard about the popular TV game show, "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" and wondered how they would fare if put under the bright lights. Mrs. Keith and Mrs. Hatch, librarians from Twinsburg Public Library, hosted "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" at Dodge Intermediate School on March 20th.

The adult contestants were Twinsburg Police Chief Noga; Ms. Scott, principal of Chamberlin Middle School; Mrs. Luette, Visual Arts Teacher at Dodge Intermediate, and Mr. Lenzo, Assistant Superintendent of Twinsburg City Schools. Each contestant had to answer 10 out of 12 questions correctly in the subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. If they did not, they had to tell the entire auditorium that they were indeed, "Not Smarter than a 5th Grader".

Perhaps not so surprisingly they all did fairly well, but the only contestant smarter than a 5th grader was Police Chief Noga!

Here are the contestants report cards:
Police Chief Noga: English, A+; Math, A+; Science, A+; Social Studies, A+
Ms. Scott: English, A+; Math, A; Science, B; Social Studies, A
Ms. Luette: English, A; Math, B; Science, A+; Social Studies, A
Mr. Lenzo: English, A+; Math, A+; Science B; Social Studies, A+

Congratulations! And thank you to all the participants.

Ohio House Passes SB 185

On March 12, 2008, the Ohio House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 185, the Ohio Library Council's omnibus library legislation, by a 94-0 vote. This legislation will:

  • correct a drafting error in HB 9 and include school district public libraries in the Open Records Law;
  • limit the number of Ohio public libraries to the existing 251;
  • change the title of library clerk-treasurer to fiscal officer;
  • allow public libraries to require their employees to participate in direct payroll deposit;
  • change the time for advertising open bids for contracts over $25,000 from 30 days to 14 days;
  • place OPLIN in permanent law; and
  • change the name of the Library and Local Government Support Fund (LLGSF) to the Public Library Fund (PLF).
The bill will become law 90 days after it is signed by the Governor, which we expect will happen within the next several weeks.

Fun time had at the 9th Twini Mini Festival

The ninth Twini Mini was a great success with 45 people in attendance. Eleven films were shown varying in length from 2 minutes, 30 seconds to 18 minutes. Attendees were asked to rate the films 1 to 4 stars. The highest rated film was "I Just Want to Eat My Sandwich." The comic film lasted just over 7 minutes and showed how annoying offices can be.

The second highest rated was "The Big Production", lasting 17 minutes, which showed several theatrical versions of a man's attempt at marriage proposal. The third favorite was "Papiroflexia", a 2 minute 30 second animated film showing a man using origami to change his environment.

Thanks to all those who attended, the Friends for their sponsorship, and Bernadette Gillota, from Independent Pictures, for hosting the program.
