TPL Cookbook Raffle

Twinsburg Public Library is holding a raffle to solicit family recipes for the Taste of Tradition Cookbook. To enter, submit a recipe form, available at the library's Information Desk. Enter to win one of three beautiful baskets filled with cookbooks and other cooking related trinkets. The drawing will be held on November 10, 2007. The Taste of Tradition Cookbook should be published in time for holidays and will be available to purchase. All proceeds of the cookbook will go to benefit the Friends of the Library for supporting the Smithsonian Exhibit: Key Ingredients, America by Food in January 2008.

Parking Lot Update - 08.31.2007

Yesterday (Thursday-Aug. 30th) afternoon they did a "roll test" to see if the stabilization was up to specifications. Two small areas at opposite ends of the parking lot were found to be "soft". While digging to reinforce the back area in the corner by the connector drive, a small pocket of quicksand was found. They are going to do their best to improve and stabilize the site by placing mesh, large stones and more fill in the area. Paving of the back area is scheduled for Tuesday (September 4th) and should be usable the next day.

Please remember that the excessive amount of rain has caused construction delays. The subsoil of this part of Twinsburg consists primarily of clay deposits and/or quicksand. The clay traps water close to the surface and causes instability in the soil above. Since our parking lot is so heavily used, we have to stabilize our subsoil way beyond code.

The high school and fitness center was constructed several years after the library and has inadvertently contributed to the underground erosion of our parking lot. Even though most of the water properly drains away from our building, the clay in the subsoil still trapped enough water to cause the damage. Here's hoping that the additional drainage and complete stabilization of the subsoil will do the trick for the next 25-50 years.

Home Staging

Learn to maximize your home's positive features and minimize the negatives on Tuesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. Interior designer Lynn Koerner will share tips and tricks of the trade to make a house as appealing as possible to potential buyers and visitors alike. De-cluttering, de-personalizing, neutralizing and curb appeal will be addressed. Participants may bring photographs of their house for discussion of home staging solutions. Languages for Kids

FYI…due to overcrowding the non-fiction DVD’s are now shelved with the non-fiction Videos. The entertainment DVD’s are still located on the walls as before, A-R are before computer #1 and S-Z are after computer #6. Please ask our staff for assistance in locating materials.

Battle of the Books

Twinsburg Public Library is once again in proud possession of the "Stand Off on Route 91" trophy, after winning the Battle of the Books, sponsored by Record Publishing on August 13. Mackenzie Barry, Stephanie Doran, Carly Kennedy, Clara Toth and Christina Zito represented Twinsburg in a contest against the Hudson and Stow-Munroe Falls Library teens. This is the second win for Twinsburg, and prizes for the teens included gift certificates courtesy of the Learned Owl and Cinemark Gift Certificates courtesy of the Friends of the Twinsburg Library.

NATIONAL LIBRARY CARD MONTH

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. Help us celebrate! There will be treats, giveaways, and prize drawings for all new cardholders. This is a great time for the whole family to sign up for cards. Visit your library! You will discover that your library card is the most valuable card you own.

BE PART OF TWINSBURG HISTORY

The Twinsburg Public Library and the Twinsburg Historical Society invite community members to be part of the living history project to be conducted during the Olde Thyme Fayre on Saturday, September 8 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Historical Society. We are hoping to record residents' reminiscences of food, cooking or restaurant-related events--a favorite local restaurant from childhood, a memorable Thanksgiving, a community potluck, or other time you would like to tell about. For the camera-shy, we will also do audiotaping to set to photographs you bring along. You are welcome to stop by the Historical Society any time on the 8th, or contact Karen or Fred at (330) 425-4268 x. 2 to make an appointment. If the 8th is inconvenient, but you are willing to help, let us know and we will arrange a different date.

The reminiscences will be used to create a video program to be shown in the Library during the upcoming Smithsonian exhibition, /Key Ingredients: America by Food,/ which will be hosted by the Library in January 2008.

WOMEN MOVING WEST: A Heritage of Strength and Faithfulness

Hasley, author of Lily’s Sister, a novel selected by the Beacon Journal as one of the best books by local authors in 2006 (ABJ, 12/31/06). Meet women who settled the American west.
